Control your Windows desktop by turning your smartphone into a remote mouse.

Modern Windows desktop PCs are powerful machines that can do it all. They can do a lot more than our smartphones and tablets can and do the same tasks better as well. They just are not as accessible. Even our laptops do not seem as convenient in a time when we can kick back on a recliner with a tablet. This is where Remote Mouse comes in. It gives us the power of our PCs in the palm of our hands.

A program like Remote Mouse has to be easy to use and—with only one feature as an exception—this program is a home run. As long as both your PC and device can connect on a local Wi-Fi, you can use your device to restart your computer, shut it down, put it in sleep mode and even wake it up. You can even turn your PC on, but it has to support Wake-On-Lan, and this may not be casual user-friendly.

There are a number of ways that you can access your PC through your phone or tablet. Remote Mouse offers a keyboard, so if a program has focus and supports keystrokes, you can type away. This program also provides you a visual representation of your desktop and you can control it with the touchscreen, which is just fantastic. Load your email, type a message and send.

Remote Mouse also provides media controls. These are bound to the Windows media controls, such as the controls you often find on modern keyboards. You can customize them as needed, but for most users, it will work out of the box. Play, pause and resume movies. Turn music volume up and down.

This program also allows you to control your mouse pointer by waving your phone or other device in the air. This feature did not sound all that great just reading about it and proved to be even worse in practice. Even if you enjoy it, the mouse pointer on a PC can be very small. We did find using a free third-party mouse pointer enlarger made the feature more usable but still not great.

Remote Mouse also supports voice typing. There are no voice commands, but you can write an email, for instance, just by talking into your phone. This is by no means a Dragon NaturallySpeaking replacement, but it performed well enough for short tasks.

Remote Mouse is available in this free version. There is also a paid version that costs a couple of bucks and provides features like landscape mode and full-screen touch mode. There are also three in-app microtransactions that cost as much as the app itself each: customize wallpaper, media remote panel and remote image viewer. These add-ons are purchasable in the free version, and if you upgrade to paid later, you can carry them over.
